Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Australian standard for safety vests?

The Australian standard is AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 — High Visibility Safety Garments. All compliant safety vests must also meet AS/NZS 1906.4 for retroreflective materials.

Class D (Day) vests use fluorescent fabric only and are suitable for daytime, lower-risk environments. Class R (Roadwork) vests feature higher retroreflective tape coverage and are required for workers on or near live traffic lanes, mining sites and other high-risk environments.

Yes. All high-visibility safety vests used on Australian worksites must comply with AS/NZS 4602.1:2011. Traffic control applications also require compliance with AS 1742.3.

Approved fluorescent colours under AS/NZS 4602.1 are fluorescent yellow-green and fluorescent orange-red. The standard specifies minimum luminance values — not all yellow or orange fabrics qualify.

An FR-rated vest is manufactured from arc-rated, flame-resistant fabric meeting AS/NZS 2980. Required in oil and gas, electrical utility and petrochemical environments where ignition or arc flash risk exists.

Yes. Volume discounts are applied at 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500+ vest thresholds. Contact us for a custom quote for large orders.

Class D/N (Day/Night) vests feature both fluorescent fabric and retroreflective tape, making workers visible in daylight and low-light or night conditions. Class D/N is suitable for most construction, warehousing and general worksite applications.

Replace a vest when retroreflective tape becomes worn, cracked or separated; when the fluorescent fabric has faded significantly; or when the garment is physically damaged. AS/NZS 4602.1 specifies minimum luminance values — a vest that no longer meets these is non-compliant.

Yes. Embroidery is available on all vest styles and is particularly recommended for surveyor vests and polo-style workwear where a premium finish is desired.

A surveyor vest is a multi-pocket hi-vis vest with 10 or more pockets, pen loops, ID windows and tool storage designed for engineers, surveyors and site supervisors. It complies with AS/NZS 4602.1.

Yes. For screen printing, we can match Pantone spot colours. Provide your Pantone reference when submitting your order.

Screen printing is best for 1–3 colour logos in larger runs and produces a durable, cost-effective result. DTF (direct-to-film) digital printing enables full-colour reproduction including gradients and photographs — ideal for small runs and complex logos.

Look for the AS/NZS 4602.1 compliance label sewn into the garment. It will indicate the class (D, D/N or R), the manufacturer, and care instructions. All vests supplied by SafetyVest.com.au include a valid compliance label.
